Dorothy Kerr Memorial Scolarship

The Dorothy Kerr Memorial Scholarship is held annually in conjunction with the Grand Australasian (Open) Highland Dancing Championships of Australia in Sydney.

ELIGIBILITY

Any dancer having achieved Honours or Honours with Distinction in an NDAAI examination from Highland Grade 3 to Advanced, any Scottish National examination SN 1 to SN 8, or any Jig and Hornpipe exam in the previous Calendar year is eligible to enter. Dancers who have successfully gained their Teacher’s Certificate are not eligible to enter the Scholarship.

ATTIRE

Dancers must wear either, a black leotard with tight black shorts OR shorts and tight black plain top (no insignia or logo), knee high white socks and hair in bun or pulled back off face for short hair

FORMAT

There are three sections to the scholarship.

1) Theory Paper: A multiple choice theory paper approx. 30 mins in duration.

2) Amalgamations: Dancers will learn three amalgamations using basic movements from the Fling, Sword Dance and the Seann Triubhas. In the Senior category, basic movements from the Reel will also be used in addition to the Highland Fling, Sword Dance and Seann Triubhas.

3) Choreography: Each dancer will have to perform a solo choreography dance with a time limit of 1½ minutes. Music must be Scottish/Celtic and may have lyrics. Costume to be the dancer’s choice but tasteful and respectful to highland dancing. Steps to be roughly 85 – 90% highland dancing movements. Music to be emailed to organiser prior to the day. In addition, provided music on the day for backup on a USB which is clearly labelled with the dancers name and age.

PRIZE

There is a cash prize for the top 3 placegetters in each age group. All overall placegetters will receive a certificate in recognition of their award, and all other dancers will receive a participation certificate. The three sections (Theory, Amalgamations and Choreography) will have placings from 1st through to 6th, then these will be scrutineered to get the overall winners.
